About Oxygen Therapy

A portable oxygen concentrator (POC) is a medical device that extracts oxygen from room air using pressure swing adsorption technology, concentrates it to over 90% purity, and delivers it to the patient through a nasal cannula. Unlike heavy oxygen cylinders, a POC runs on electricity or battery and weighs less than 2 kg, giving the patient freedom to move and travel inside and outside Kuwait. The SG we offer delivers up to 1000 ml/min of oxygen at 93% ±3% concentration.

The device draws room air through a filter, pressurizes it, and passes it over a molecular sieve that adsorbs nitrogen while allowing oxygen to pass through. The pure oxygen is stored in an internal reservoir and then released in pulses to the nasal cannula synchronized with the patient's inhalation (pulse-dose system). This process repeats thousands of times per minute silently, delivering oxygen at over 90% purity throughout operation without ever needing refills.

Pulse-dose delivers a defined oxygen bolus only at the start of each inhalation, doubling utilization efficiency and extending battery life. Continuous flow delivers oxygen at a constant rate at all times whether the patient is inhaling or exhaling. Pulse-dose is suitable for most exertional hypoxemia cases, while continuous flow may be required during sleep for some patients. The SG operates in pulse-dose mode only.

It is strongly recommended to get assessed by a pulmonologist before starting oxygen therapy. Assessment is available at the government Chest Diseases Hospital or at private pulmonology clinics such as New Mowasat. The assessment determines whether your oxygen saturation (SpO₂) is ≤ 88% at rest or during exertion, which is the threshold for prescribing oxygen therapy. After the prescription, we help you set the device to the flow level your doctor specified.

Yes, oxygen therapy is very safe when used at the prescribed level. Common side effects are minor and manageable (nasal dryness, mild skin irritation). Oxygen toxicity is very rare and only occurs at high concentrations over extended periods. The most important precaution: stay away from any flame or spark source while the device is running (smoker, oven, heater) because oxygen increases flammability.

Oxygen therapy does not cure COPD or pulmonary fibrosis, but it significantly improves quality of life and extends survival for patients with chronic hypoxemia. Research shows that using oxygen at least 15 hours daily for patients with severe hypoxemia extends life and improves cardiac and brain function. It is a long-term supportive therapy for most cases.

Your doctor determines the number of hours based on your case. For patients who need oxygen only during exertion, running the device during walking and moving is sufficient. For more severe cases (chronic blood hypoxemia), medical studies recommend using oxygen at least 15 hours daily including during sleep. Adherence to the prescribed duration is the most important factor for achieving health benefits.

If you stop oxygen therapy while still needing it, hypoxemia symptoms return: shortness of breath, excessive fatigue, morning headache, reduced concentration, and cyanosis (bluish extremities) in severe cases. Long-term, untreated hypoxemia strains the heart and increases the risk of right heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Do not stop therapy without consulting your doctor.

Usage & Care

Check the internal battery charge or plug the device into mains power. Attach the nasal cannula to the oxygen outlet, then place the prongs inside the nostrils and route the tubing over the ears. Power on the device, set the flow level per your doctor's prescription (1 to 5), and breathe normally. The device senses the start of inhalation and releases the pulse dose automatically.

Weekly: remove the external air filter and wash it with lukewarm water and mild soap, dry completely before reinstalling. Wipe the device body with a damp (not wet) cloth. Daily: clean the nasal cannula prongs with a light alcohol wipe and dry them with a clean cloth. Never use bleach or concentrated alcohol on the device body or filter, and never submerge the unit in water.

Replace the nasal cannula every two weeks at most for continuous daily use, or immediately if you notice: discoloration, persistent odor despite cleaning, material stiffness, or tubing cracks. Regular replacement prevents bacterial buildup and protects the airway from infection. We include a replacement cannula with each new order, and additional cannulas can be ordered via WhatsApp.

External washable filter: wash weekly and replace every 6 months approximately. In Kuwait's dusty environment, the external filter may need replacement every 3-4 months. The internal molecular sieve filter is designed for the lifetime of the device and does not need routine replacement, but if oxygen concentration drops below 85%, professional service is required. Never operate the device without the external filter.

Charge the battery to full after every use, and do not leave it empty for extended periods. Avoid very high temperatures (do not leave it in a car under the sun). If you will store the device unused for two weeks or more, charge the battery to only 50% before storage. With proper use, the battery lasts 1.5-2 years before replacement is needed.

Nasal dryness is one of the most common side effects. Solutions: 1) Use the optional oxygen humidifier bottle (filled with distilled water and attached between the device and cannula). 2) Use a medical nasal moisturizer (sterile saline spray) several times daily. 3) Apply a small amount of medical petroleum jelly around the nostrils externally only — do not apply it inside the nose while using oxygen, as it is flammable. 4) Stay well hydrated.

The device runs on universal voltage (100-240 V) so no power converter is needed. For air travel: notify the airline 48 hours before the flight, get a medical letter proving your need for the device, and ensure batteries are charged for 150% of flight duration. The device carries CE certification, but airline acceptance varies — always check before traveling. For road travel, use the included car charger.

Yes, the device comes with a 12-24 V car charger that runs from the cigarette lighter socket. You can run the device directly from the car charger or recharge the internal battery while driving. Avoid placing the device in an enclosed unventilated space and secure it well to prevent sliding. Never smoke in the car while the device is operating.

Medical & Diagnosis

Common hypoxemia symptoms include: shortness of breath with mild exertion, chronic fatigue and exhaustion, morning headache, reduced concentration and memory, sleep disturbance, rapid heartbeat, and bluish lips and nails in severe cases. The simplest screening method is to use a pulse oximeter — if SpO₂ reads ≤ 92% at rest, see a pulmonologist immediately.

Kuwait has several options: the government Chest Diseases Hospital (main reference for respiratory diseases), pulmonology clinics at government hospitals (Mubarak Al-Kabeer, Al-Amiri, Al-Farwaniya, Al-Adan, Al-Jahra), or private clinics such as New Mowasat Hospital. The assessment includes resting SpO₂ check, the 6-minute walk test, and arterial blood gas measurement in severe cases.

SpO₂ is the percentage of blood hemoglobin saturated with oxygen, measured by a pulse oximeter placed on a fingertip. Normal values for a healthy adult: 95-100%. Values 91-94% indicate mild hypoxemia, 86-90% moderate, and ≤85% severe. A pulmonologist typically prescribes oxygen therapy at SpO₂ ≤ 88% at rest or during normal exertion.

The right flow level is determined by a pulmonologist after measuring SpO₂ at rest and during exertion. The goal is to maintain SpO₂ ≥ 90% at all times. Physicians typically start at level 2 and adjust based on response. With the 5-setting SG, we configure the device to the prescribed level and follow up readings with you in the first week to confirm the setting fits.

Children may need oxygen therapy in certain cases (severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, congenital hypoxemia), but treatment must be supervised by a pediatric pulmonologist and may require pediatric-specific equipment (smaller cannula, finer flow levels). The SG is designed primarily for adults — consult a pediatrician before using it for a child.

Those who should avoid use without close medical supervision: severe COPD patients dependent on CO₂ as a breathing stimulus (may cause hypercapnia), carbon monoxide poisoning cases (need high continuous flow), children without specialist supervision, and active smokers (fire risk). Oxygen is flammable — always stay away from flame and spark sources.
