Oxygen Consultation: Where to Get Assessed in Kuwait
The first step to oxygen therapy is getting a proper assessment from a pulmonologist
Before starting oxygen therapy, the patient needs a comprehensive assessment from a pulmonologist that determines the extent of oxygen need and the appropriate flow level. The assessment includes measuring blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) using a pulse oximeter, pulmonary function testing (PFT), and may include a 6-minute walk test to measure oxygen during exertion. In Kuwait, several specialized centers are available for these assessments in both government and private hospitals.
What is Pulse Oximetry (SpO₂)?
Pulse oximetry (SpO₂) is the fastest and simplest way to assess blood oxygen levels. A pulse oximeter placed on a fingertip reads the percentage of hemoglobin saturated with oxygen. Normal values for a healthy adult are 95-100%. Values of 91-94% indicate mild hypoxemia, 86-90% moderate, and ≤85% severe. A pulmonologist typically prescribes oxygen therapy at SpO₂ ≤ 88% at rest or during normal exertion.
What to Expect from a Respiratory Assessment?
A respiratory assessment measures your blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) using a pulse oximeter, evaluates breathing function with a pulmonary function test, and may include a 6-minute walk test to check exercise oxygen levels. Based on results, the pulmonologist determines whether you need oxygen therapy and the appropriate flow level.
Preparation Tips
- Bring a list of your current medications and any prior pulmonary tests
- Avoid heavy meals 2 hours before the assessment
- Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes for the 6-minute walk test
- If you have a home pulse oximeter, bring recent SpO₂ readings
The 6-Minute Walk Test
The 6-minute walk test is a simple and accurate way to assess how much oxygen drops during exertion. The doctor measures SpO₂ and heart rate before, during, and after walking a fixed distance for 6 minutes. If SpO₂ falls below 88% during the test, it is a clear indication of the need for supplemental oxygen during daily activities. This test is common in pulmonology clinics in Kuwait.
